A White Sands photoshoot is unlike any other experience in the Southwest.

The first thing most people notice about White Sands National Park isn’t the sand.

From the road, it’s hard to understand just how vast this place really is. Then you start walking. You cross the first dune, then another, and suddenly the landscape seems endless. The city feels far away. The noise disappears. Everything slows down.

Best Time for a White Sands Photoshoot

One of the questions I get asked most often is:

“When is the best time to visit White Sands?”

The truth is that White Sands is beautiful year-round. The dunes don’t change much from season to season, but the weather, the colors, and the overall experience can feel very different depending on when you visit.

Spring

Spring is one of the most popular times for photos at White Sands.

The temperatures are usually pleasant during the day, but once the sun starts to set, it can cool down surprisingly fast. The light is beautiful, and the changing weather often creates dramatic skies.

Summer

Summer days can be hot, but evenings are often much more comfortable than people expect.

Because sessions take place later in the day, many couples find the temperature manageable once the sun begins to drop toward the horizon. Summer also tends to produce some of the most colorful sunsets of the year.

Fall

Fall offers comfortable temperatures and beautiful evening light. It’s one of my favorite times to photograph at White Sands because the weather is usually predictable and the dunes are especially pleasant to explore.

Winter

Winter can be surprisingly beautiful at White Sands.

The daytime temperatures are often comfortable, but once the sun disappears, the temperature drops quickly. Bringing a light jacket for the walk back to the car is always a good idea.

What About Wind and Sandstorms?

White Sands is part of what makes White Sands so unique.

Most days are calm and peaceful. Then there are days when the weather decides it has other plans.

From late spring through early fall, strong winds and thunderstorms can develop quickly. One moment the dunes are quiet and serene. The next, you’re watching clouds build on the horizon as the wind begins to pick up.

I’ve experienced sessions where everything looked perfect until the weather changed within minutes.

The good news is that I keep a close eye on forecasts before every session. If conditions become unsafe or uncomfortable, we’ll simply reschedule. I’d rather wait for the right experience than force a session in poor conditions.

My Favorite Time of Day

While White Sands is beautiful throughout the day, sunset is where the magic happens.

As the sun gets lower, the white dunes begin reflecting the changing colors of the sky. Soft pinks, purples, oranges, and reds start appearing across the landscape, creating photographs that feel completely different from what you see during the middle of the day.

White Sands is exactly what its name suggests.

White.

Once you step into the dunes, the landscape becomes a giant white canvas stretching toward the horizon.

This is one of the few places where bold colors truly shine.

Many couples are surprised when I encourage them to wear color, but this is one location where vibrant tones often photograph far better than neutral ones.

One thing I recommend avoiding is matching outfits.

When both people wear the same color, it’s easy to blend together in photographs. The goal is to complement one another, not disappear into a single shape.

The exception is black.

Black is timeless, elegant, and creates beautiful contrast against the dunes.

What Should I Bring?

The dunes stay surprisingly comfortable underfoot, but the sun can still be intense, especially during spring and summer.

Should I Bring a Second Outfit?

Most of my White Sands sessions include two different looks.

Sunset is by far my favorite time to photograph at White Sands.

The dunes are beautiful throughout the day, but the last hour before sunset is when the landscape truly comes alive. The changing light often fills the sky with soft pinks, purples, oranges, and reds, creating photographs that feel completely different from what you see at midday.

How far is White Sands from El Paso?

White Sands National Park is approximately 90 miles from El Paso, or about a 90-minute drive depending on traffic and road conditions.

Many of my couples make the drive from El Paso and Las Cruces for their engagement session because the landscape is unlike anything else in the region.

For current park hours, entrance fees, and alerts, I always recommend checking the official White Sands National Park website before your visit.

What happens if it’s windy?

A little wind can actually create beautiful movement in photographs.

However, if conditions become unsafe or the wind is simply too strong to create a comfortable experience, we’ll reschedule the session for another day.

My goal is always to create the best possible experience, not force a session in poor conditions.

How long does a White Sands photoshoot last?

Most sessions last around two hours.

This gives us plenty of time to explore the dunes, enjoy the changing light, photograph multiple looks, and create a gallery that feels relaxed rather than rushed.

Do we need to know how to pose?

Not at all.

Most couples tell me they’re nervous about being photographed.

Absolutely.
